On the Right Path is rooted in the spirit of Legendary Coach Pete Newell, who always had a genuine passion to help and teach others.

Pete Newell is considered one of the most influential people in the history of basketball. He coached in college for 14 years (University of San Francisco, Michigan State University, and the University of California, Berkeley), winning the 1959 NCAA Championship at the University of California. A year later he coached the gold-medal winning team at the 1960 Summer Olympics.

After retiring from coaching, he served as team executive or scout for several NBA teams, including GM of the Los Angeles Lakers from 1972-76, where he was instrumental in trading for Kareem Abdul-Jabbar from the Milwaukee Bucks.

From 1976 until his death in 2008, he impacted hundreds of players and coaches at his famed “Big Man Camp.” It started with him working with one player, Kermit Washington (LA Lakers), and grew into becoming the best instructional camp for post players, drawing many of the top players each year from the NBA and College. The camp was unmatched with its focus on improving footwork and fundamentals.

A 1979 inductee into the Basketball Hall of Fame, Newell is one of only three coaches to have led basketball teams that won NCAA and NIT championships, as well as an Olympic gold medal.
